National Library Periodicals Information System:
The first Arabic-letter turkish newspaper published in the Ottoman Empire using mechanical techniques was "Vakayi-i Misryye", published in Egypt in 1828, and "Takvim-i Vekayi" in Istanbul, the capital of The State-i Aliye-i Osmaniye. The first unofficial newspaper published in today's newspaper concept is "Ceride-i Havadis".
XIX. Since the second half of the 20th century, weekly, 15-day and monthly journals have started to be published together with daily newspapers. The first Turkish journals emerged as the publication of scientific associations as in Europe.
Research shows that the first published journal was "Mecmua-i Fnin".On April 15, 1946, the National Library, which was started to work in a small office in the Ministry of National Education's Directorate of Publications, gained its official identity on March 29, 1950 and inherited the legacy of the Ottoman period. The National Library kept old-letter Turkish periodicals in its warehouses and used microfilm to benefit researchers and users.
In order to provide better and faster service to the researchers with the developing technology, the efforts were initiated to transfer the Old Letter Turkish Periodicals in the National Library collection to electronic media in order to be available via the Internet.
In this project, which was carried out between 2008-2011 by the Directorate of Periodicals of the National Library Presidency, the transfer of Old Letter Turkish journals was completed. In addition, the article tags of some of the EHT journals were transcripted and matched with their images and presented to the service in the system.
Researchers who want to benefit from these periodicals will be able to scan bibliographic mastheads by connecting to the National Library website from their location via the Internet, as well as see the content of periodicals transferred to electronic media, as well as have the opportunity to see and read the content of the articles in these periodicals.
After the digitization of EHT newspapers and journals was completed, digitization efforts were continued in 2012 in order to make Turkish journals and newspapers in the National Library available online. Turkish newspapers and magazines can be accessed in full text or content screening can be done. The project will continue in the coming years with the digitalization of Turkish journals and newspapers with content scanning.
